Denton Cinco De Mayo Event Information

Since it is getting close to may I decided to look up some information about cinco de mayo. I've heard about it and I know it's a Hispanic holiday but I was not sure what it was about so I decided to do some research.

History of Cinco de Mayo
A lot of people get this day mixed up with the Mexican Independence day but that is not what it celebrates. This holiday "commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862". According to Britannica Encyclopedia, "While the victory was impressive, the French returned with reinforcements and eventually captured Puebla after an extended siege. The city was retaken by the Mexicans in April 1867, but the original battle remained a potent symbol in Mexican consciousness." That website also mentions that this celebration usually incorporates the whole week rather than just the day.

Denton Cinco De Mayo!
I found out that there will be a celebration at Quakertown Park off of McKinney here in Denton! They will have a couple of beauty pageants, some music, and food. One of the pageants is called "La reina" which I did not understand. After using an online translator I found out it means "queen".
